Iconic 1973 Land Rover Series 3 Diesel SWB 88 (Short Wheel Base 88″) Diesel. As confirmed by the British Heritage Motor Museum Archive Department, in the UK: “chassis number 930-00579-A is a CKD (complete knock down) that was shipped from the UK to Costa Rica in component form and assembled by Ensambladora Automotriz, S.A. for sale in Costa Rica. The vehicle was optioned with a tropical roof and rear sideways military seating.
It remained in Costa Rica until importation to the United States in 2018, showing what is believed to be an original 41,900 km. I purchased the vehicle in early 2019 and was told by the importer that it was used for Eco Tours in the Costa Rican Rain Forrest at some point in it’s life.
Prior to me acquiring the vehicle it had been repainted in the original Orange with Off White Tropical Roof & Wheels, the upholstery had been refreshed in original Black Vinyl, the brakes and axles had been rebuilt.
In 2019-2020 I decided to continue with the mechanical and cosmetic refreshing of the vehicle whilst retaining as much originality/light patina as possible, I have invested in excess of $15k to date. The work was completed by the following companies and is fully documented: High Gate Motors (Series Land Rover Specialists), Barrington IL., Foreign Car Specialties, Tallmadge, OH and Lehman’s Auto Upholstery, Wadsworth OH.
Following is a highlight list of the work completed invoices are available for review on request:
Replaced Clutch & Rear Main Seal
Replaced Steering Box

Patrick the owner of High Gate Motors, who installed the New Clutch and Rear Main Seal, remarked how rust and repair free the chassis was and is happy to take calls on the condition of the vehicle:

This Landy Series 3 is now ready to put huge smiles on it’s new owner’s face and offers a unique vintage 4×4 experience, that is steeped in a worldwide history stretching back to the original Series 1 in 1948. It’s 2.25 Liter 4 Cylinder Diesel Engine offers robust low RPM performance/torque, as you would expect from a Diesel and is delivered through a 4 speed manual gearbox. It’s on road performance is best suited to country/back roads and it’s most at home off-road, or on a farm/ranch. It will also happily take pride of place and probably win a few ribbons at your local car show!
